In alignment with this year’s school theme, “Beyond the Classroom,” the Early Years pupils at Premier International School embarked on a memorable excursion to the National Children’s Park and Zoo in Abuja. It was more than just a field trip — it was a carefully planned educational adventure that brought the wonders of the animal world closer to our little learners.

From the moment the buses rolled out of the school premises, excitement buzzed in the air. Upon arriving at the zoo, the children were welcomed by a lush landscape and a variety of animals they had previously only seen in storybooks and classroom illustrations. With wide eyes and joyful chatter, they moved from enclosure to enclosure, meeting tortoises, ostriches, lions, donkeys, monkeys, and several other fascinating creatures.
Guided by their teachers and zoo staff, the pupils learned about the animals’ habitats, diets, behaviors, and sounds. Each stop provided an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-life experiences. Teachers encouraged questions, helping the children draw links between the science lessons they had received and what they were observing in real time.

One of the most enriching aspects of the excursion was the way it awakened a sense of curiosity and empathy in the children. Watching animals in their living spaces prompted discussions about care for wildlife, environmental responsibility, and the importance of zoos in protecting endangered species. The experience also sparked creativity, as many pupils expressed their excitement through drawing animals they saw, mimicking their movements, or singing animal-themed songs.

Aside from the educational value, the trip also provided an important opportunity for social interaction, exploration, and fun. Children shared snacks, enjoyed open spaces, and bonded over the shared thrill of discovery. For some, it was their first time visiting a zoo — an experience that will undoubtedly leave lasting impressions.
The Early Years Zoo Excursion was a clear reflection of Premier International School’s commitment to holistic education. By taking learning beyond the classroom walls, we nurture inquisitive, thoughtful, and compassionate young minds who see the world as their classroom.
